What to do with your unused medications:
We encourage you to “Monitor, Secure and Dispose” of your prescription medications.  The National Prescription Take Back Initiative schedules collection events each spring and fall.  Our local law enforcement officers participate in these events.  In addition, you can safely dispose of unused medications every day of the year.

Unused medicines can cause many problems.  One way to curb prescription drug abuse is to store medicines in a locked box in your house and to properly and safely remove them from your home when they are no longer needed.  Flushing them only leads to unwanted consequences for aquatic life – water filtration systems are not generally designed to eliminate the kinds of chemicals and substances found in our medicine cabinets.  Disposal in a landfill does not destroy the chemicals and substances either.  Here is what to do:  Take them to one of the Take Back Locked Boxes in Boone County and they will be disposed of properly.  The boxes are available to the public 24/7 and are located in safe areas.

Q. What about privacy?  The entire process is COMPLETELY CONFIDENTIAL. You merely drop off your unwanted prescription drugs. No questions asked. No documentation is required.

Q: What can I drop off?  Any unwanted prescription or non-prescription medicines may be brought to the drop-off sites. The only items not allowed are syringes.

Q: When can I drop my old or expired prescription drugs?  These are permanent drop off points.  The Boone County sites for disposing of your unused medicines are available any time 24/7.  The boxes are located near the front door entry at each location.
