Mayor Jackson

According to Rex Nelson, Senior Editor with the Arkansas-Gazette, something incredible is happening across Arkansas right now. From the timberlands of South Arkansas to the rolling hills of the Ozarks, our state is experiencing an economic boom that spans industries, regions, and communities. As mayor of Harrison, I not only celebrate what’s happening across the state — I’m proud of the steady progress we’re making right here in the heart of the Ozarks.

Let’s start in South Arkansas, where a modern-day gold rush is unfolding — not for gold but lithium. With the rise of electric vehicles and energy storage, lithium has become a vital resource, and Arkansas is sitting on some of the richest deposits in North America. Investment is pouring in, and companies are racing to establish operations in a region that’s long been rich in timber and tradition. This lithium boom promises jobs, innovation, and a brighter future for the area and the state.

In Northwest Arkansas, the momentum is equally impressive. Walmart recently completed a $1 billion headquarters campus in Bentonville — a state-of-the-art complex that will anchor its global operations for decades. In addition to the region’s robust healthcare, education, and arts infrastructure, it’s easy to see why families and businesses flock to the area.

Eastern Arkansas may not always make headlines, but it’s a powerhouse in its own right. The region is home to the largest steel-producing county in the world — yes, you read that right. The area is leading America's steel renaissance with multiple mills and expansions by companies like Big River Steel and U.S. Steel. That means thousands of good-paying jobs, increased exports, and stronger supply chains.

And let’s not forget Central Arkansas, where Amazon has made a significant investment with major fulfillment and delivery operations. Their presence is changing the logistics landscape and helping Arkansas compete in the modern economy. Little Rock continues to grow as a medical, financial, and government hub, with a ripple effect throughout the state.

Amid all this incredible growth, there’s Harrison — our small, beautiful city nestled in the center of the Ozarks. While we may not have billion-dollar skyscrapers or national headlines, we have something equally valuable: a strong sense of identity, community, and purpose. We are where people come to raise families, start businesses, and enjoy the quality of life that’s increasingly hard to find in today’s world.

We continue working with our Chamber of Commerce and local partners to strengthen our economy, grow industry, and improve wages for working families. We’re making steady gains — attracting new retailers, revitalizing our downtown, and promoting tourism and outdoor recreation. And while we support growth, we’re not trying to be the “big boys.” We know who we are — and we love who we are.

Harrison’s story is part of the bigger Arkansas story: a state moving forward with confidence, opportunity, and pride. From high-tech lithium extraction to traditional steel manufacturing, from billion-dollar retail headquarters to small-town success stories — we’re seeing a new era of prosperity take root.

As mayor, I want to invite others to examine what’s happening across Arkansas and right here in Harrison. You’ll find a state on the move and a hometown that’s ready for tomorrow while staying true to its roots.
