The Harrison Parks Commission met Thursday, July 8, in the City Hall Administration Board Room.

Jon Tel Robbins and Jennifer Feighert were introduced to the committee. Jennifer has been the interim summer director for Creekside Aquatics since the retirement of Libby Salmon. JonTel has been working with the outdoor pool.

Under new business, Director Chuck Eddington brought up the possibility of a Parks Sponsorship Policy. After some discussion, some of the committee didn’t see a problem with some businesses providing equipment with the sponsor’s logo on it. Others did not want to undercut current sponsorship agreements.

One board member said, “I don’t think it’s a problem if a competing business wants to provide equipment. It’s not about the company, but about doing something for the community. Another committee member said, “We all benefit from donations.”

The group decided to table the discussion and eventually establish a subcommittee to research some guidelines for sponsorships.

Several members said, “We remember not having two nickels to rub together for any programs. So accepting donations seems like a no-brainer.”

Eddington said, “This community is very giving to Parks, and we are very grateful.

Eddington mentioned they planned to apply for a state matching grant. The application would ask for an all-inclusive playground and splash pad at the Equity Bank Sports Complex. He is hoping for a $250,000 matching grant.

Lights and cameras will be installed around the pickleball courts around the first of August. “I’ve got to let my staff finish up with all these tournaments. We’ve been swamped with other projects,” he said.

Parks was very excited when the Valley Springs School District agreed to offer a Creekside membership to the 120-member staff. “Bergman has now contacted us, and we will meet with them.”

Current Creekside membership is at 4,752. Eddington has spoken to a few other institutions, but deals have not been finalized yet.

He was very pleased with the recent soccer events they hosted. “We were packed with teams and will proceed with checking on teams for adults, too.”

Creekside Aquatics will host a swim meet on Thursday, July 10, at 6 p.m. About 70 participants will attend.

The national tournament this weekend will include approximately 150 teams from ten states. Games are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Sunday games start at 8 a.m. and hopefully end by 6 p.m.

“All six turf fields will be in use,” Eddington said. “At our last national tournament, the concession stand grossed $24,000.”

He told the committee he had wrestling and rag ball meetings set up about possible events at Creekside.

“We currently have nine men’s softball teams. We will also do a 4th-6th grade school league basketball team, keeping everyone busy for six weeks on Saturdays.”

“Fall soccer begins soon, and we are progressing on the new trail,” he said. The meeting adjourned at 12:51 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for the first Tuesday of August, at noon.
