The Advisory Committee for Harrison Parks and Recreation met Tuesday, Dec. 2, for the monthly meeting in the Administrative Conference room at City Hall. The committee heard about upcoming events at Creekside and discussed the lights next to the trails at the soccer complex.
Executive Director Chuck Eddington said the first wrestling event went very well. “We had great feedback from those who attended. Two hundred students participated in this first event hosted at Creekside. Technically, it was an off weekend for them because of hunting season. However, we have our foot in the door now and are excited to continue growing this sport. The maximum students is usually between 400-500 students, so that’s what we expect for next year’s tournament – when we can pick the date.”
Several holiday events are scheduled at Creekside. Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus will visit on Monday, December 8. Times available will be posted, so parents and students won’t have to stand in long lines.
The committee approved the Lights the Way 5K, where the funds will be used to install solar lights on the trails surrounding the soccer fields.
The School’s Out program will begin on Dec. 29 and run through Jan. 2, excluding New Year’s Day, starting at 7:30 a.m.
On New Year’s Day, a non-competitive 5K walk or run will take place, with participants invited to enjoy black-eyed peas and cornbread afterwards.
January’s calendar includes additional classes for water aerobics and chair aerobics. A Hunting Legacy Expo is scheduled for Jan. 17-18 in partnership with Valley Springs School District and the Arkansas Game and Fish. Lots of vendors featuring “outdoors” and classes will be hosted by AGF. Eddington is expecting three thousand people for the two-day event. The bow shoot will be a state qualifier event, plus a Big Buck Classic is scheduled.
In February, the “What a Girl Wants” Expo will be held just in time for Valentine's Day on Saturday, Feb. 7.
An enrollment special is offering the month of December free for those who sign up for a one-year membership. Eddington said the three-month membership has been a very popular item.
