Fire Chief Marc Lowery told the City Council Thursday night, Dec. 18, that he had been disappointed in the CodeRED emergency warning system and would not be renewing the city’s subscription with the company.

“Storm sirens were installed this past Thursday and Friday. They aren’t up and going yet. We still need to transfer electricity to them. Next year, we will replace the final two and have all five sirens on the same system. Additionally, regarding warning systems, we have decided not to renew our contract with the CodeRED system. It has not performed how I like. The number of people it would contact was about 15 percent. We will be looking at some other options after January 1.”

Lowery explained later that outdoor storm siren systems were never designed to be heard inside a business or home. “We will continue to investigate additional ways to alert our residents.”
