The Harrison Colony of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution received a Proclamation from Mayor Jerry Jackson recognizing November as National American Indian Heritage Month.
The proclamation stated, “The history and culture of our great nation have been significantly influenced by American Indians and indigenous peoples. The American Indians have enhanced the freedom, prosperity, and greatness of America today, and their customs and traditions are respected and celebrated as part of a rich legacy through the United States.”
Native American Awareness Week began in 1976, and Congress expanded recognition and President George Bush approved it in August 1990, designating November as National American Indian Heritage Month.
Lisa Whitmer received the proclamation from Mayor Jackson.
