City Offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 19, to observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Rob McCorkindale made a phone call to a current Main Street Harrison board member and told him there was still money in the former Main Street account from years ago. Are you interested? Of course, the board member said. Several of the Main Street Board members gathered at the Town House Cafe and accepted a generous check of $11,888. Thank you to the former Main Street organization for paving the way for the current one. With the community's assistance, this effort will continue the legacy of the original Main Street and help downtown and the community thrive.

Harrison’s Mayor Jerry Jackson (left) and Boone County Judge Robert Hathaway, along with their assistants, Christeen Waters and Ivy Day, met with Alex Smith from the Arkansas Opioid Recovery Partnership. The city and the county have partnered for an individualized joint training session for city and county officials on strategies to abate the Arkansas opioid epidemic.

Mayor Jerry Jackson and Chief of Police Chris Graddy were invited to speak to the Harrison District Board of Realtors on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Western Sizzlin’ about the sunset provision on the two ordinances that govern the general fund quarter-percent sales tax and the half-percent sales tax for infrastructure. Voters have continued to renew these taxes every eight years. To continue planning for growth and to provide services to the community, the City Council voted unanimously to ask voters to remove the provision that requires a vote every eight years. Jackson and Graddy stressed, “This is not a tax increase.”

Early voting begins Feb. 17 and election day is March 3.

The location for today's Historic District Commission meeting has been moved from the Admin Conference Room to the Council Chambers. The meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. today.

The public hearing held on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 5:30 p.m. went without any negative comments or discussion. Business owner Connie Cash had questions about the District expanding to cover more contributing structures. Downtown business owner and chairman of Main Street Harrison said he was excited for this commission and how it would help preserve the downtown historic district. Business owner Beverly DeWitt said she was very excited about the local control the Historic District Commission would have and to have answers for questions like "what kind of windows do I need." COO Wade Phillips explained that the Commission will be responsible for overseeing the process once everything has been approved.

If you are interested in purchasing or restoring historical buildings downtown, this information will be very valuable to you.
